SALES TAX/VAT/CST REGISTRATION

Value Added Tax (VAT/Sales tax) has been considered to be a major step an important development in the area of indirect tax reforms in India. Vat aims to tax only the value added at each stage of the product and not the entire invoice value. By ensuring that only the incremental value is taxed, vat eliminates the cascading effect of taxes on commodities, and thereby reduces the ultimate cost to the consumer.

VAT is a State subject and every dealer whether manufacturer or traderare mandatorily required to register with the Sales Tax Department, if the gross annual turnover exceeds the threshold limit provided in VAT rules. The threshold limit for registration varies from state to state; however in most of the states if the gross annual turnover of the manufacturer or trader exceeds Rs.5 lakhs per annum, registration under VAT is mandatory.

Any dealer having gross annual turnover of less than the threshold limit, may also apply for voluntary registration with the Sales Tax Department.

A dealer shall apply for registration within 30 days from the date of being liable to get registered.

Sales Tax
  1. Copy of the Pan Card of the company
  2. Two passport size photographs of proprietor/partners /directors/trustees etc.
  3. Self attested copy of Aadhar Card of proprietor/partners /directors/trustees etc.
  4. Self attested copy of Pan Card, Voters Identity Card/Aadhar Card Card/Passport/Driving license as a proof of identity of proprietor/partners /directors/trustees etc.
  5. Self attested copy of Bank Statement/Electricity Bill/Mobile Bill/Telephone Bill,Voters Identity Card/Aadhar Card Card/Passport/Driving license as a proof of address of proprietor/partners /directors/trustees etc.
  6. Premises Address Proof
    • If Rented: Rent Agreement and utility bill likely electricity bill, telephone bill, etc.& No Objection Certificate from land owner.
    • If Owned: Ownership proof. Receipt of Municipality tax paid.
  7. Details of Bank accounts along with a Cancelled cheque.
  8. Memorandum/Articles of Association/List of Directors. (In case of company)
  9. E-Mail id and Mobile number ofproprietor/partners /directors/trustees etc.
  10. List of main Items of Business.
  11. Description of top 5 items the firm/companywant to deal.
  12. Copy of Purchase and Sales Bill (if transaction is done).
  13. Details and proof of Number of additional places of business within or outside the state.
  14. Expected turnover in coming year.

Process & timeline

Value added tax registration comes under the purview of state governments, therefore time taken for getting registration certificate depends on the time taken by the department in processing the documents.

For example in the state of Delhi, we get provisional Registration number/TIN no.instantly after uploading the documents, and signed copy of the registration certificate is issued on satisfactory inspection of premises and due verification of requisite documents.
